This is also the only breed that comes in three size varieties. (1)Standard and (2)Miniature that are part of the AKC Non-Sporting group and (3)Toy which is part of the AKC Toy group. AKC recognized the Poodle in 1887. All the Poodles are one breed, governed by the same standard. The denominations standard (over 15 inches tall at the shoulder), miniature (over 10, but under 15 inches), and toy (10 inches or under) are used to describe only size. Poodles can be a variety of solid colors, including white, black, apricot and gray, or parti-colored (this color, however, is a disqualifying fault). The Poodle clip is not merely decorative, it was a necessary clip meant to protect the joints and vital organs in cold water. The rest of the body was shaved for less drag in the water. The poodle coat is dense and generally does not shed. Poodles have hair instead of fur causing them to be non-shedding and hypoallergenic The name poodle comes from the German word Pudel (short for Pudelhund = "splashing dog"). Thus getting the English word Puddle from the German word Pudel. Another nickname is Caniche. Poodles are intelligent, alert, active, and eager to please. Their aptitude has brought them to circus performing worldwide. Poodles are extremely people-oriented dogs and make good pets. They have been on the Top Ten list of AKC registrations in the US for at least 10 years, ranking number 8 in 2007. |
