The Bulldog is a medium-sized dog, and although they are not your typical lap dog, but would like to be! They range in size from 40 - 50 pounds and live an average of 8-10 years. The Bulldog may be brindle, white, red, fawn, fallow (pale cream to light fawn), piebald (patched) or black. The AKC recognized the Bulldog first in 1886 when it became the newest member of the Non-Sporting Group. The original bulldog had to be ferocious, courageous, and almost insensitive to pain as it was initally bred as a bull-baiter. The Bulldog was set against a tethered bull, winning only if he could grab the bull by the nose and bring the bull down. It was common for dogs to be killed or maimed at these events. Their gentle dispositions and adorable wrinkles put them in the top 10 most popular dog breeds in 2007, sliding in under the wire at #10. Bulldogs have a tendency to form strong bonds with children, and are gentle and protective. The breed requires minimal grooming and exercise. They can also have alot of health problems due to their short nasal passages. FAMOUS BULLDOGS: * Warren Harding owned a Bulldog named "Oh Boy." * Calvin Coolidge owned a Bulldog named "Boston Beans." * The Bulldog is featured in the Disney film "Lady and the Tramp." DUE TO INITIAL FEROCITY OF BULLDOG, THEY HAVE BECOME GOOD SCHOOL MASCOTS: * It is commonly accepted that Handsome Dan, the Bulldog mascot for Yale University, is the oldest-running traditional live mascot in the United States. * A bulldog named Chesty is the official mascot of the United States Marine Corps. * The University of Georgia's mascot is also a bulldog name Uga. |
